HAPPY FATHER'S DAY!

I hope each of you Dads had a wonderful Father's Day and did exactly what you wanted to do!
Our celebration was held at Glenda's house. Mom had toyed with the idea of having us all gather at their house, but then decided she'd like to come and go at their leisure! We all got to Glenda's about 11:00 and were concerned when Mom called and said that Dad was having some dizziness. She had him resting in his chair with hopes that he would feel better once she was ready to go. Thankfully, he was feeling much better after he rested, so they were able to come! Glenda lives off 71 west in South Austin, so it's not a bad drive for them from Marble Falls.

Dad really enjoyed getting loving attention from the four of us kids, our spouses, and the grand kids and great-grand kids that were there. We were all also thrilled that Troy and Terri were able to join us! Dad gets a big kick out of watching 3 year olds Mia and Austin and their antics! They play so well together and are quite entertaining! We all marveled at Glenda's prolific garden and thoroughly enjoyed fresh tomatoes on our burgers! She was also generous with all of us and sent us home with bags of fresh produce! YUM!!!

We girls had a little "meeting" with Mom to see if she will let us do more to help her. She said that she would be willing to let us take Dad to one of his therapy sessions each week. He is now going Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Of course, we are thrilled to do so! We also suggested that she allow Jerry, their part-time aide, to take Dad on at least one of the other days. Her reasoning in not letting him take Dad is that she hates to pay him to" just sit there" while Dad is in therapy! We said that we thought they could afford that and, whatever it cost, it was worthwhile if it gave her a break! She chuckled at herself and reminded us of how tight she is!!! I've never thought of Mom as tight, but she is very, very frugal!

Tomorrow, I am going to get Dad and take him to therapy. I'm excited about that because I'll get to witness what happens there and then blog about it! Jean is going to go Wednesday and give Mom a chance to pack for Colorado without interruption.

We are witnessing some progress with this round of therapy and with the re-introduction of acupuncture! Today, Dad called Jean over to the window and pointed to a couple of cars that he didn't recognize. He was saying the letter "M", which is new! Another big improvement we've noticed is Dad's control over his mouth and face. Not to sound disrespectful, but Dad has been having a problem with drooling. I did not see him drool one time today and Mom said it has been that way since she started taking him for acupuncture treatments! Dad was very resistant to acupuncture while in the hospital and when he first got to go home. However, he now gives it the big thumbs up!!!

When Mom and Dad were leaving, I leaned in to the suburban and told Dad that I loved him. Mom told him to tell me and he did, in his own way! She said she gets him to tell her he loves her every night when he goes to bed! For the 64 years that they have been married, they have never gone to sleep without a good-night's kiss and without saying "I love you" to each other! Theirs is a great example to follow!!!

Mom, Dad, Lisa and Danny and Ollie and I leave Thursday morning for our trip to Fran and Jimmy Callahan's lodge outside Steamboat Springs Colorado! Mom is a little bit nervous about having to be at our house by 8:15 Thursday morning, especially since Dad likes to sleep until at least 9:00! I tried to talk her in to coming here to spend Wednesday night, but she said it will be better to sleep in their own bed that night and leave from home that morning. It made her feel a little better when I reminded her that she and Dad could nap on the 2-hour flight from Austin to Denver and on the 4 hour drive from Denver to the lodge. Keep your fingers crossed that they make it here on time!

Dad will spend Friday and Saturday with the guys on the golf course. If he gets tired, we girls can go pick him up. Otherwise, Mom, Lisa and I are going to be lazy and do nothing but relax, read and/or go for little walks! I can hardly wait!!! Mom does want to go to Wal-Mart in Steamboat and see if they have long-sleeved collared golf-type shirts for Dad. We have looked and looked, but there are none to be found in Austin or Marble Falls - it's just not the right season for long sleeves down here! If we don't find them in Colorado, I'll do some on-line shopping.

Again, God bless all you wonderful Dads! I honor all of you!

Didn't happen...

Dad wasn't feeling well early today, having trouble with some nausea, so Mom cancelled her appointment and they stayed home. I checked on them off and on all day. Dad slept most of the morning and woke up feeling much better. In fact, he and Leslie went out to the deer camp this evening to have steaks and play poker with Danny and Ollie and the rest of the guys! That's always good incentive for him to feel better! Those guys get out there and laugh and have a great time! That's so good for Dad! Mirth is God's medicine. Everybody ought to bathe in it. ~Henry Ward Beecher

All our bunch will gather at Glenda's house for Father's Day this Sunday. It gives us all such pleasure to honor our beloved Dad! To all of you Dad's who read the blog, God bless you!

There in every memory
See his love and care
Strength and hands to count on
Freely he does share
Provider, toil so faithfully
To make our dreams come true
Give strong and tender discipline
Though it is hard to do
A Father is God's chosen one
To lead the family
And point it to His will for life
Of love and harmony...

Practice makes perfect...

Danny went out to see Mom and Dad last week on Thursday. He said that Dad used his hemi-walker and made four rounds with it! Dad seemed in control and pretty well-balanced. Other than that, the visit was uneventful...

Mom has a follow-up-type doctor's appointment in Austin early this afternoon. She and Dad are picking us up and we are meeting Danny at Luby's for lunch. I think Luby's is Mom's favorite restaurant!!! After lunch, Danny, Ollie and I are coming back to our house so Dad can nap while Mom goes to her doctor's visit. I'm sure Mom will want to do a little running around before she comes back to pick up Dad! She doesn't want me to go with her to the doctor, but I plan to entice her with a visit to Stein Mart afterwards if she'll agree to let me go!!! I like to go with her and provide an extra set of ears. Also, Mom gets a little turned around when she's driving in town...so much has changed since they lived here! We'll see if she lets me go!!!

I'll write more after I see them today! Love to all!!!

Acupuncture works!

Mom called me this morning and sounded on top of the world! She took Dad for an acupuncture treatment yesterday in Marble Falls, to the office of a recommended practitioner. She said this morning Dad came in the kitchen with a great big smile on his face! They sat together and read articles out of the paper and laughed a lot! They must not have been reading the Austin American Statesman!!! Anyway, she said that they were having a wonderful morning together and that they decided that Dad would continue acupuncture treatments because they believe the treatments really help him feel better! Psalm 118:24 ~ This is the day the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it! Oh happy day!!! Amen!

Weekend of Reunions!

Dad loves all his family, but two reunions in two days was a little much for him! The Mabel Pauly Family Reunion (my Dad's Mom's side of the family) was Saturday . For the past 3 years it has been held at the ranch of my sister and her husband, Jean and Jimmie Plentl. They have a wonderful porch on the front of Jimmie's shop that is large enough to accommodate all of us. The weather was hot, but we were blessed with a cool breeze the entire day! Our crowd was smaller than the last few years, but it gave us a chance to visit with each other a little more. The most popular food item had to have been Barbara and Jimmy Haley's tamales from Lufkin! They were the best I'd ever had! Mmmm...I could eat about a half-dozen right now!!! Of course, everything else was delicious! Jean's blackberry cobbler dish was scraped clean!!! We missed the Seigler and Doyle families being there, but you can be assured that I will do a better job of nagging them for next year's gathering!

Everyone was pleased to see how well Mom and Dad looked! Mom has her girlish figure (I'll bet she can fit into her wedding gown that she wore 64 years ago!) and Dad looks healthy as can be! Dad moved around is his wheelchair and made sure he sat in on each group's conversations. I am such a talker that it would be so hard for me to sit and not be able to join in on the conversations. I can only imagine how difficult and frustrating it must be for him. He does seem to make the best of it, though. Proverbs 29:236 says...A man's pride brings him low, but a man of loyalty gains honor I know a lot of honorable men, but none more so than my father. He humbles himself to his situation and makes the best of it rather than hiding from the world. I can't tell you how much I respect him for that. I also hold my Mother in high esteem for her devotion to him..."give her the reward she has earned and let her works bring her praise at the City gate."

When Dad had gotten in the Suburban to go home, I kissed him and said I'd see him tomorrow! He quizzically looked at me so I reminded him that Sunday was the Goertz Reunion at Rockne! Oh the face he made! He absolutely loves that family, but two reunions two days in a row was a bit much to consider at that point!!! But, without surprise, they were in Rockne in time for the traditional 11:00 Mass in the Parish Hall with the family gathered!

The Goertz Reunion is my Mother's-Mother's-Mother's family! It's my Grandma Grohman's and her siblings' decendants. You won't believe this, but there were about 248 people there, and that's not nearly all of us!!! To say the least, the hall was packed and the food tables were loaded!!! That's the best lunch anywhere! Everyone brings covered dishes and it's some of the best food in this world!!! There's always fresh garden-grown tomatoes, green beans, squash and plenty of sausage and fried chicken!!! Then comes the desserts...unbelievable!!! The food isn't the best part though! It's the love that you feel the minute you walk in the door! We're a happy bunch and we love to kiss and hug! I always leave with my spirit refreshed! We are so blessed to have such wonderful heritage on both sides of our family!

Two reunions in one weekend is a lot, but it's so perfect to get in touch with family members that we don't see throughout the rest of the year and get it all done in one weekend!!! My poor husband Ollie gets "name-overload," who's that and who's she married to and what are their kids' names, but he's such a good sport!!!

So, until we see each of them again, we hold all our family members dearly in our hearts and love them through prayer! "Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it." ~Proverbs 22:6. Our parents have taught us the love of God and the love of family. What could be more important than that?!!! Amen.

Thursday

Spoke to Mom this morning. She is suffering with allergies causing her not to sleep well. I suggested she take a nap this afternoon and she said she'd already decided that!!!

Mom said she and Dad went to their Church last night for a Spaghetti Supper! I love that they are getting out to socialize like that! It's all up to her to get them there, so good for her!!! She's such an amazing woman, friend, wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother!!! Whew!!! I honor her! "No man succeeds without a good woman behind him. Wife or mother, if it is both, he is twice blessed indeed." (Harold Macmillan)... We'd all agree wholeheartedly that Dad is/was twice blessed to say the least!!!

Mom and Dad and all of us are looking forward to the family reunion on Saturday at Jean and Jimmie's ranch! We love the rain and thank God for it, but we pray for a pretty day for our gathering!!! We then have Mom's family reunion at Rockne on Sunday! My kind of weekend!!!

Family faces are magic mirrors. Looking at people who belong to us, we see the past, present and future. We make discoveries about ourselves." -Gail Lumet Buckley

Hot Guts for Lunch!!!

Memorial weekend Saturday Mom and Dad drove over to Jean and Jimmie's house for a few hours. Ollie's daughter, Neely, husband, Carl, and our twin 19 month-old granddaughters were there. Mom and Dad got a huge kick out of watching the girls play and exude their cuteness!

Danny went out to see Mom and Dad yesterday! He called Mom early enough to earn her not to fix a big breakfast because he was bringing Daddy some Elgin hot guts! They're his favorite thing to eat, bar none! Danny said things were pretty status-quo with Mom and Dad!

I hope all of you had a safe and blessed holiday weekend! Hugs! Sandi
